Open Work Permit : Canada

An open work permit allows individuals to work in Canada without needing a specific job offer beforehand. Since it is not tied to a particular job, you are exempt from certain requirements that apply to other work permits. This means you do not need to obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) or provide proof of employment from an employer who has paid a compliance fee. However, not everyone is eligible for an open work permit.
You may qualify for an open work permit if you:
  • Are an international student who has graduated from a designated learning institution and is eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
  • Are a student who can no longer afford your studies (destitute student).
  • Hold an employer-specific work permit and are experiencing abuse or are at risk of abuse related to your job in Canada.
  • Have applied for permanent residence in Canada.
  • Are a dependent family member of someone who has applied for permanent residence.
  • Are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student.
  • Are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant under the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program.
Are a refugee, refugee claimant, protected person, or their family member.
  • Are under an unenforceable removal order.
  • Hold a temporary resident permit.
  • Are a young worker participating in special programs.
